Chemistry Unit 2 - Structure bonding and properties of matter

Students have alreaady used the particle model and described changes of state at KS3.  They will also have looked at the different types of chemical bonding  and energy transfers needed to make substances change state.  They will have looked at metals and carbon in more detail describing how the properties link to the uses.

In this unit students will develop their understanding further by describing what happens to particles in a substance as changes of state occur.  They will investigate the amount of energy needed to heat a substance and also how much is needed to cause a change in state.  Bonding is studied in more detail and students will use what they have learnt about atomic structures in unit 1 to describe how and why different substances bond in different ways.  The properties of substances will be looked at and also linked to the bonding present.
