Learning Resource Centre
The Learning Resources Centre (LRC) aim is:-
To provide a flexible and stimulating learning environment and to continuously develop a centrally and professionally organised stock of resources for staff and students.
The LRC is open Monday to Thursday 8.15am to 4.00pm and Friday 8.15am to 3.45pm.
We run a before school club (BSC) from 8.15am to 8.40am and the LRC is open to all at break and lunchtimes. After school there is a homework club.
The LRC has 20 computers. We have a daily paper, the local papers, and a variety of general interest magazines for leisure reading. We also have a well-stocked library of both fiction and non-fiction books which cater for a wide range of reading ability particularly to support the Accelerated Reader programme.
The LRC runs a very successful Accelerated Reader (AR) computer programme that helps the teachers and LRC staff monitor and manage a student’s independent reading. AR motivates students of all abilities to read for pleasure, and enables staff to diagnose problems accurately and quickly.
This programme is very simple to use - the student takes a Star Reading test which gives them a reading range. They select a book of their choice within their range. Once the student has read the book, they take a quick computer based quiz on the book. The quizzes are fun and the students receive immediate feedback in the form of a printed TOPS report which shows them how well they have done.
All English groups have one lesson a fortnight in the LRC. Tutor groups also have reading time twice a week and are taking part in the Love of Reading scheme..
At the end of each term prizes/awards are given out to students in various categories. Every student who passes a quiz with 100% receives a certificate and all students who have quizzed have the chance to win a small prize when all their names are put into a lucky draw.
