Magnetism roadshow attracts and inspires our Year 8 students
Did you know there are twice as many magnets in an electric car than a fuel car or that tomatoes and apples can be moved by magnets?
The whole of Year 8 were treated to an educational and entertaining ‘Magnetism School Roadshow’ delivered by the Education Programme at BAE Systems, which is supported by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.
The roadshow was organised by our Careers Team of Mrs Barber and Miss Grant to inspire our students to take an interest in jobs relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
Magnets and electromagnetism are used everywhere and are essential for developing highly advanced planes, ships, submarines and aircraft carriers as well as equipment used in everyday life such as speakers in your TV or phone. Magnets will also play an important role for the world to get to ‘net zero’ by reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.
Students learnt the basics of how magnets work, what is magnetic, the uses of electromagnetism and the strength of how a magnetic force can suspend a human body in the air.
Thank you to Lucy, Suzie and John (aka Mr Magnet) from the BAE Systems Education Programme for visiting Spalding Academy and Bourne Academy today to give our students an insight how magnets are used in STEM.
