Black History Month educates and celebrates achievements

Freddi Bird and Megan Shortland with Mrs Dennis (Head of History Department) and Mr Martin (Head of School)

Last term, the History department organised a series of activities for Black History Month to celebrate the lives and impact of black people from all over the world. One of these activities was a competition where students could write a poem about people who inspired them.

There were lots of amazing projects completed and everyone who took part earned points for their House, plus there were prizes and extra points for the best projects.

Congratulations to Freddi Bird in Year 8 (Blue House) and Megan Shortland in Year 8 (Green House) who were awarded joint first place for their amazing contributions.

The history department were impressed with the creativity and original ideas that went into both Freddi’s and Megan’s poems. Freddi was inspired by American civil rights activist Rosa Parks and how she fought for equality of black people. Megan took inspiration for the many black women who did not give up under oppression and changed the course of history by standing firm.

The reason why the school actively participates in Black History Month is that History can often be ‘whitewashed’ in the sense that important black figures are forgotten about.

In the past, racism was much more common place and historical evidence sometimes misses out or understates black contributions. Black History Month acts as a reminder of the amazing contributions black people have made that have changed our lives today.
