Discovering careers in the NHS with Lincolnshire Training Hub

Working for the NHS is one of the most rewarding careers and is ideal for people who are passionate about making a difference. There are currently over 350 exciting and challenging jobs available in the NHS in clinical and non-clinical roles with various pathways.

We were therefore pleased to welcome the Lincolnshire Training Hub for the NHS to Spalding Academy and taking the time to speak to our Year 10 and Year 11 students as part of our ‘myth-busting’ careers programme.

Ruth Pollock, Operations & Liaison Manager at the Lincolnshire Training Hub along with a local GP in Lincolnshire and a medical degree student from Lincoln University run an interactive workshop and delivered an assembly presentation for our students.

In the workshop, students from Year 10 and 11 were able to use stethoscopes, take blood pressure readings, measure heart rates and practice the art of bandaging a wrist against the clock. One group tested heart rates ‘before and after’ exercise and were shocked to learn the figure doubled in such a short time!

In the assembly, Year 10 learnt more about the diverse range of jobs available in the NHS and the qualifications required for different pathways such as apprenticeships that can all lead to a career in Primary Care. It was fascinating to hear from the medical student and her career journey so far. Showing a timetable of a typical week, she was able to demonstrate that despite studying an intensive degree, she is still part of the university hockey team and other clubs and societies.

These ‘myth-busting’ assemblies have certainly opened up a new possibility of different sectors and professions for our students and it was been encouraging to see them talk so passionately about the opportunities on offer.
