Kin-Ball festival and donation introduces a new team sport

A group of eight Year 7 students had a fantastic time learning a new team sport, getting active and making new friends as they took part in a Kin-Ball Festival, which was held at University Academy Long Sutton.

The event, which was organised by Lincolnshire School Games provided an exciting and engaging experience as well as a great opportunity to help these students with their transition to secondary school.

The teams celebrated remarked success as they showcased their skills in this innovative and inclusive sport by bringing home multiple accolades including prestigious teamwork and sportsmanship medals. These awards highlighted our students commitment to the core values of Kin-Ball, which are inclusivity, respect and collaborative play.

Kin-Ball is a relatively new sport, which originated from Canada where three teams of four players compete against each other at the same time to try and keep a giant ball (measuring 1.2 metres) off the floor! The objective of the game is to score the most amount of points by not letting the ball touch the ground.

It’s a great game to get students active, work as a team and most of all having fun! Our students developed key skills in communication, teamwork, and strategic play while enjoying a high-energy sporting environment against teams from other schools.

The success of the Kin-Ball programme at Spalding Academy has also been enhanced by a generous donation from The Junior Sports Programme Trust Ltd, who have provided our school with a complete Kin-Ball set. This equipment will enable us to integrate Kin-Ball into our regular PE curriculum with the aim to establish dedicated clubs, offering more students the opportunity to experience this engaging sport.

Mr Favell, Teacher of PE said “The donation of the Kin-Ball equipment will enhance our diverse sporting programme by providing innovative and inclusive athletic opportunities for all students. The enthusiasm our students showed at the district competition demonstrates the potential of Kin-Ball to engage students who might not typically participate in traditional sports.”
