Scientists are 'blown away' as they make wind turbines for green energy

One of the amazing local companies who regularly supports Spalding Academy at their Careers Fairs is Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind. They are a leading green energy company who have developed renewable electricity technology through the use of offshore wind farms.

We were therefore ‘blown away’ when they offered to deliver a workshop for our Year 9 students to explain how we can use wind energy to generate electricity.

As part of the workshop, students took part in the ‘Supergrid Challenge’ where they were tasked with making a small wind turbine whilst reflecting on the cost of materials. The electrical output of each of the turbines was then tested to see which design could generate electricity at the lowest cost.

The students put their engineering skills to the test, seeing how small changes to their design could have a big impact on the amount of energy generated. The students were fantastic throughout the session – impressing us with their problem-solving and resilience. Well done to Bella Bafico and Lana Harvey who built the winning turbine!

We were really grateful for Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind to take the time to work with our students and help them explore the many STEM careers available to them within the renewable energy sector and the local area.
