Workshop on Shakespeare's Macbeth enriches learning before GCSE exams

To give our Year 11 students a deeper understanding and appreciation of the plot, themes and characters of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, we arranged for ‘Stage-ed’ who are an external theatre company specialising in the GCSE English curriculum to deliver interactive and engaging workshops for the whole year group.

Featuring three professional actors with experience of the West End and Royal Shakespeare Company, they covered key scenes and analysed the language of Shakespeare by encouraging discussions and asking key questions such as “Why does Macbeth make this choice?” and ” How might Lady Macbeth describe herself?”

The combination of watching performances alongside discussions has helped enrich our students’ learning of this classic play, which is part of the GCSE English Literature curriculum.

As part of the English Literature course, our students have been analysing various aspects of Shakespeare’s tragedy; covering the plot and character development of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, the Witches and Macduff, whilst also exploring key themes like ambition, power, the supernatural and appearance vs reality.

Thank you to Mrs Teixeira, Head of English for arranging this opportunity as students left feeling enthused and inspired to write about this classic text in their summer GCSE examinations.
