Spalding host the first ever SLAT Games for Year 8 teams
With South Lincolnshire Academies Trust now having four schools, this provided the perfect opportunity for all four of the schools to compete in our very own SLAT sports tournaments.
The first of these new competitions was for the Year 8 Netball and Football teams and Spalding Academy were proud to be hosts of the competition. All of the schools have strong teams, which made all of the games very competitive and played in good spirit.
Both of the Spalding teams performed extremely well with the Year 8 Netball Team winning their competition and the Year 8 Football Team coming runners up on goal difference.
For the Netball tournament, our players came up against a strong defensive Cowley team in the first game and drew 1-1. We then secured a close 5-4 victory against Bourne Academy and going into the last game against Giles we knew that we had to win. The team were really determined and won their final game 5-0 to be crowned champions on points.
Miss Pearce, Teacher of PE said “The girls put up a strong fight in every game and they all improved as the tournament went on. I am so proud of this group of players as they played as a team and had smiles on their faces throughout every game. They really deserved to win in the first SLAT tournament.”
The Football tournament proved to very exciting right to the end with Spalding winning 2-1 against Cowley in their first game and then losing 2-1 to Bourne. Going into the final match, the final score would be crucial and although Spalding won 2-0 against Giles, they only just missed out winning the tournament on the goal difference of just one goal to Cowley. It was a really closely matched competition and well done to Cowley Academy.
Mr Duggan Head of PE at Spalding Academy said “It was a fantastic evening of Football and Netball and the students really enjoyed themselves. The mini league format and two games being played at the same time added to the excitement. I’m really looking forward to the other Year groups competing this term and seeing the SLAT games continue to grow.”
