This is an optional subject which all students will study for 3 hours per week.

Doing a Health and Social Care course is more than just learning about how to be a nurse. There are so many different jobs in a range of settings that you might have not even heard of them! Studying a BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care gives you an opportunity to explore the different avenues that you could pursue in the future.

Component 1: Human Lifespan Development

  • This unit looks in to the factors that have had an influence on a person’s growth and development through the life stages. You will look into the effects of experiencing major life events such as having a baby and how this effects a person’s development.

Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values

  • This unit looks at the values of care in Health and Social care, with particular focus on HSC services within the industry.

Component 3: Health and Wellbeing

  • This unit looks closely at the factors that can influence a person’s health and wellbeing i.e. smoking, diet, etc. You will write your own health improvement plan to help improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.

The Health and Social Department is organising a trip to the Thackray Museum in Leeds to look at how Health and Social Care in the UK has progressed over the last 100 years.

If you decide to then study Health and Social Care in Year 10 and 11 the course is assessed in the following ways:

  • Component 1 – Coursework
  • Component 2 – Coursework
  • Component 3 – External Examination

The coursework units require a good level of written ability. BTEC Tech Awards are based on giving practical examples in a health and social care setting and focusing on the skills and knowledge needed in the workplace. You will learn a large range of new knowledge and skills, and learn how to apply your knowledge to real life situations.

After studying BTEC Level 2 Health & Social Care with grade 9-4 in any Science subject you could study BTEC Level 3 Health & Social Care at Bourne Academy Sixth Form.

Once students have been successful in this qualification, there are a wide array of career paths that can be taken.
