Year 9 Football and Netball teams are the Trust tournament champions

Spalding Academy had a double celebration when both of our Year 9 Football and Netball teams won the SLAT sports tournaments against all the other schools in our Trust.

We were once again proud to be hosts for the competition and welcomed Year 9 teams from Bourne Academy, Cowley Academy and Giles Academy in the friendly games where all schools played each other.

Before the tournament, the Year 9 Boys Football team had a setback when half of the first team were not available to play, so Mr Favell used the depth of our squads to select eager players to fill in the positions. This managerial masterstroke combined with the determination of all the players wanting to play for the school team paid off as the team won all three games and even kept clean sheets in every game! They won 3-0 against Cowley, 2-0 against Bourne and 3-0 against Giles.

Mr Favell, Teacher of PE said “This is a fantastic achievement from the whole team as the really done themselves proud. Special mentions go to Max, Charlie, Tyler, Connor, Taylor, Noah and Kevinas for joining the team at the last minute.”

Our Year 9 Netball team had a more much settled team going into the tournament and didn’t let the poor weather get them down in a closely fought tournament that was decided on goal scored. The game against Cowley was key to the goal difference as Hollie and Bella were incredible with their shooting to secure a 9-1 win. It was much closer against Bourne as the team had to come from 2-0 behind to eventually draw 3-3. In the final game against Giles they knew they had to win or draw to be champions and a fast paced game saw goals at both ends with a final score of 7-7. After all the games, Spalding, Bourne and Giles were all tied on 11 points, but our superior goals difference of 8 meant we were champions.

Miss Ringrose, Teacher of PE said “Bella, Hollie, Savannah, Jessica, Katie, Amelia, Ellie and Emily have all worked incredibly hard all season to perfect their set plays and gel together as a team. We’ve had mixed results leading up to the competition, but the hard work and determination was worth it in the end. I am incredibly proud of the whole team.”
