Young authors visit local primary school to read winning stories

Earlier this year, South Lincolnshire Academies Trust launched a ‘Read Your Way’ competition for students to write and illustrate a short story or poem aimed at primary school children aged 4 to 6 years.

The winners then had the chance to visit local primary schools and read their work to younger students. This is the fantastic opportunity that six students from Spalding Academy had when they visited St Paul’s Primary School in Spalding to read their stories.

There was much excitement in the Year 1 class when the Spalding Academy students visited St Paul’s. The younger children were incredibly receptive and enjoyed the creative tales that the students in Years 7 to 9 had crafted, which includes original stories and re-imagined versions childhood favourites. They also loved how the students brought their stories and characters to life as they were beautifully illustrated with their designs.

The Spalding Academy students then got involved in the class by helping the younger children with their own reading as they had the chance to show off their literacy skills by reading their favourite books from the classroom.

The winning students who visited St Paul’s Primary School were Lucy Shortland, Rosanna Smith, Alexis Dakteris, Alex Bloodworth-Flatt, Winter Wheatley and Elizabeth Hammond.

Mrs Daisy Bland, Trust Executive Education Director and Lead of the Trust Communications Agenda said “Literacy and reading is embedded into the curriculum for all subjects at South Lincolnshire Academies Trust and is a whole school priority. We fully promote the importance of reading in all year groups by leading on a variety of initiatives that go above and beyond the national curriculum requirements, and are unique to South Lincolnshire Academies Trust. Our wide range of strategies have improved the reading ages in all year groups with significant progress from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, where we know sustained improvement directly impacts outcomes and attainment at the end of Key Stage 4. The success for the Trust has been recognised by the Department for Education where South Lincolnshire Academies Trust are the number 1 ranked Multi Academy Trust in the East Midlands area and in the top 6% of MATs in England.”
